THE THEME OF ART MUSEUM DAY 2017: ART MUSEUMS FOSTER VIBRANT COMMUNITIES

THE BUTLER will participate for the 2nd consecutive year in the Association of Art Museum Directors’ (AAMD) Art Museum Day. The Butler will offer a special program for an invited area school on Friday, May 19, 2017 beginning at 8:30 am. Last year, THE BIAA—along with more than 175 other AAMD member museums across North America—participated in Art Museum Day.

As it has been since its dedication, admission to the Butler is free. Donations are always welcome.

The theme of this year’s Art Museum Day is Art Museums Foster Vibrant Communities. AAMD members across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will be offering programs and initiatives to celebrate the arts and the important role art museums play in their communities. In addition to bringing the best of human creativity to people across North America, museums serve as engines for the creative economy, partners with school systems and civic organizations, and anchors for public spaces and neighborhoods, making their regions better places for everyone who lives and works there.

This year, from 8:30 am to 10:30 am, THE BUTLER’s Education Department is presenting a special program led by artist Ron Barron who’s exhibition, RON BARRON: GLEANINGS opens at the museum Sunday, May 21. About 135 Struthers Middle School 7th grade students will participate in the program which will take place in the museum’s popular Beecher Court. The multi-faceted artist will interact with the students and reflect on his artwork with them. The students will then create an assemblage in the style of the artist’s work. Numerous docent-led group tours and activities will commemorate Art Museum Day, as well. THE BUTLER also invites visitors to share their experiences on Art Museum Day via social media, with the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay.

AAMD represents 245 art museums across the United States, Canada, and Mexico—from regional museums in small towns to large museums in major urban centers. International Museum Day is organized annually around the world by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). AAMD’s Art Museum Day is an opportunity to focus attention on the role of art museums in North America, as part of ICOM’s global celebration.

A comprehensive list of participating AAMD member art museums will be available on the AAMD website. Note that while AAMD’s Art Museum Day and ICOM’s International Museum Day are formally held each year on May 18, some institutions shift their celebrations to adjacent dates.

RON BARRON: GLEANINGS will be on view at THE BUTLER INSTITUTE OF AMERICAN ART from May 21, 2017 through June 25, 2017. THE BUTLER will host a Meet-the-Artist opening reception May 21, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Admission is free and the reception is open to the general public and media.

“Gleanings” comprises two of the artist’s series:

Trash Scans – digital collages of detritus picked up on the streets of Manhattan in December 2016.
Adrift – digital collages of Lake Erie beach finds from a 2016 solo exhibition at the Bonfoey Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio. A feature article on Barron’s art appeared in the New York Times on December 27, 2016.
